MUMBAI: Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has raised questions over the inclusion of young pacer Harshit Rana in all formats of the Indian Cricket Team. While Ashwin acknowledged Harshit's talent as a bowler, he also expressed doubts about his batting ability and consistency at the No. 8 position. Harshit Rana has been included in India’s ODI and T20 squads for the upcoming series against Australia starting October 19.

The former cricketer questioned the selection committee's decision while speaking on his YouTube channel. He said he couldn’t understand why a bowler who has taken only 19 wickets from 10 matches since last year was selected for all formats.

“I really want to know the reason behind his selection. I wish I were part of the selection committee to understand their thought process,” Ashwin said.

"The team might be looking for a fast bowler who can also bat in Australian conditions. Someone clearly believes Harshit can bat, and that’s probably why they see him as an option at No. 8. But there is no certainty about Harshit’s batting,” he pointed out.

Harshit Rana’s breakthrough came during IPL 2024, where he took 19 wickets in 11 innings for Kolkata Knight Riders and played a key role in their title win. He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker of that edition of the tournament. However, Ashwin questioned whether that performance alone was enough to earn him a place in all formats.

Despite his concerns, Ashwin praised Harshit's skill. “Most people make decisions based on assumptions. But you only truly know when a player performs on the field,” Ashwin added.
