Tragic news after Asia Cup match: Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage breaks down after hearing about father's death
DUBAI: Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage was shocked to learn of his father's passing during the Asia Cup match. Dunith was celebrating his team's victory against Afghanistan when he learned of his father's passing. The 22-year-old Dunith played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's victory despite conceding five sixes in the match.
Team coach Sanath Jayasuriya and the team manager informed Dunith of the death of his father Suranga Wellalage after Sri Lanka qualified for the Super Four with a six-wicket win. The unexpected death was due to a heart attack. A video of Sanath Jayasuriya consoling Dunith after learning the news of his death is also going viral on social media.
In the video, Jayasuriya can be seen comforting Dunith and Dunith is seen getting emotional. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russell Arnold, who was on the commentary after the match, broke the sad news to the outside world. “Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga, passed away just a while ago. He also played cricket — captaining Prince of Wales College when I led St Peter’s College,” Arnold said.
Dunith Wellalage had conceded 49 runs in four overs against Afghanistan. However, Sri Lanka easily surpassed the target with six wickets and eight balls to spare thanks to Kusal Mendis’s 74 runs. With the victory, Sri Lanka also qualified for the Super Four. Afghanistan was eliminated from the Asia Cup with the loss in this match.
