Clashes during victory celebrations in Palakkad: Case filed against 200 people
PALAKKAD: A case was registered against 200 people in the violence that took place during the election victory celebrations. The Palakkad Town North police suo motu registered a case against LDF and UDF workers. During Ramesh Pisharody's election victory rally, UDF workers unleashed violence on the CPM district committee office.
The demonstration, which started near Victoria College at 6.30 pm on the day of counting, turned violent when it reached the CPM district committee office. Firecrackers, stones and soda bottles were thrown at the office. Stones were also thrown from the office compound. Three policemen were injured in this. With this, the police stormed the party office and beat up the workers. The workers, who were seriously injured, sought treatment at the district hospital. About fifty policemen entered the office and attacked the CPM cadres.
“The police suddenly had a behavioural change, knowing that a new government was about to take charge. The police should not behave without respect. If you behave with respect here, we will give respect in return. If you attack, we will defend. On Monday, during a victory celebration, the UDF group attacked the district committee office with the help of the police. They brutally attacked the CPM cadres after trespassing into the office yard. Three LDF workers were seriously injured. The violent incidents took place after the UDF workers threw firecrackers, stones and soda bottles into the office,” said E N Suresh Babu.
“It is not the style of the UDF to attack any party office. CPM cadres threw bottles at the Congress members who attended the rally. We have never accepted a stance that encourages violence. Everyone should be vigilant to prevent acts of violence.’ Said A. Thankappan, DCC President.
