Vijay can now rule blindly, AIADMK splits, Shanmugam faction supports TVK
CHENNAI: The AIADMK faction led by C V Shanmugam in Tamil Nadu has announced support for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). After announcing public support, Shanmugam clarified that the continuous defeats faced by AIADMK in the last ten years prompted a crucial change. With this, indications are emerging that the relationship with the BJP-led NDA alliance is ending.
‘This party was formed against the DMK. Our politics has been against the DMK for 53 years. Although the proposal to form the AIADMK government with the support of the DMK was made, majority of the members opposed it. If we form an alliance with the DMK, AIADMK would not exist,’ Shanmugam told media.
Vijay's party secured a majority in Tamil Nadu by winning 108 of the 234 seats, but was 10 short of a majority. TVK got Congress’ five seats and two seats each of League, CPM and CPI. The Shanmugam faction has now extended support to TVK.
Meantime, Shanmugam, who said that he is not in any alliance at present, said that his focus will now be on reviving and strengthening the party. Shanmugam also clarified that he has no intention of splitting the party. Political observers believe that the current split will pave the way for a political fight with Edappadi Palaniswami, who has refused to form an alliance with TVK during the government formation talks.
