Saleswoman steals ornaments worth 1.66 crore from jewelry shop

AHMEDABAD: The police have registered a case against a female employee for stealing gold ornaments worth Rs 1.66 crore from a jewelry shop. Harshita Shetty, who had been working as a saleswoman at the jewelry shop for the past 11 months, committed the theft. The police have registered a case against the woman based on the CCTV footage of the incident.

She stole the ornaments that was kept in the display tray of the jewelry store. She left by hiding it inside her uniform. Later, while showing the jewelry to a customer who had come to the store, the employees became suspicious when the gold bracelet kept in the display tray was missing. An inspection conducted found that more jewelry was missing.

The woman left with the stolen jewelry on Monday evening. The woman left after informing her colleagues that the showroom owner had granted her an emergency leave. However, the theft came to light when the owner, Darshanbhai, checked the CCTV footage after realizing that Harshita had left without his permission.

Police said the footage shows her taking jewelry from the shelves behind the counter, hiding it inside her clothes, and then taking a bag from the storeroom and leaving. During the inspection of the stock, it was found that gold chains, rings, mangalsutras, lockets, earrings, watches and other ornaments worth Rs 1.66 crore were missing. Attempts were made to contact the woman, but her mobile phone is switched off. The police have intensified search for the accused.
