'Presence of ethylene oxide'; Singapore recalls Mumbai-based Everest fish curry masala

NEW DELHI: The Singapore government has issued strict orders to immediately stop the sales of Everest fish curry masala imported from India. The Center for Food and Safety Agency in Hong Kong issued the order in this respect. The decision comes after experts found traces of ethylene oxide in the masala which is considered very harmful to the body.

The agency has also directed SP Muthiah & Sons Pvt Ltd, which oversees the spice import, to immediately initiate action to recall the products from various marketing centres in Singapore. Ethylene oxide, which is used in high amounts for agricultural purposes and pest control, is strictly prohibited in food products.

It is feared that traces of such harmful chemicals can lead to a serious health crisis for humans. The agency has also suggested that those who have consumed food with these particular spices immediately consult a health expert to understand their health status.

Consumers are also advised to reach the centre where they purchased the particular spices, to know more about it. Amidst the hullabaloo, Everest company has refrained from making a response on the issue.
